M'shisha al Fo'awi likes this costume because it's fun to
dance in. She put it together from items that she already had
in her closet.
The top is a FatChanceBellydance choli, purchased from Flying
Skirts of San Francisco. M'shisha attached some copper-colored
"melon" beads and gold paillettes to the neckline for
a little flash.
She purchased her skirt about 10 years ago from the Lane Bryant
catalog. It's a simple tiered skirt made from a cotton print
that normally hangs in her regular street wear closet.
Over the midriff, M'shisha al Fo'awi is wearing a body stocking
made of power net from Sugar Petals in a tan color slightly darker
than her skin tone. |
|
M'shisha al Fo'awi made her harem pants back when she was preparing
to appear in her very first belly dance recital. The fabric is
a black and coppery-gold knit, found at a local fabric store. |

M'shisha al Fo'awi wears two hip scarves with this skirt. The
top one is a wool blend, paisley print shawl, with predominant
colors of red and blue on a gold background. Her mother made
it back when M'shisha al Fo'awi was still in high school. For
some reason, this harmonizes well with the black print skirt.
The bottom hip scarf is a red lace shawl, which she uses to keep
the two prints apart from each other, as well as show them both
off. |

M'shisha al Fo'awi offers this costume advice to fellow dancers:
"Remember, wear what makes you feel wonderful -- forget
about the shoulds or "oughtas" -- if you feel beautiful,
you'll project that feeling. I can't say this often enough."

When considering the costume, M'shisha al Fo'awi said, "Although
I think, in the abstract, that this costume would look super
with a red, ruffled, taffeta petticoat (not unlike the one Rhett
Butler bought for Scarlett's Mammy in 'Gone with the Wind'),
I don't think the added skirt width would be flattering to my
figure."
The photo to the left shows a good view of M'shisha al Fo'awi's
head scarf. She calls it, "One of the best purchases I've
made, costume-wise. It's a simple, crocheted triangle of gold
thread with a few sequins worked in. Actually, I own four of
these: two gold, two silver. These can be used for head scarves,
belly drapes, hip 'poufs', and even bra covers. Terrific little
item." |
