About this Song

This song debuted via Internet music web sites in December, 2019. In January, 2020, composer Mohamed Madeen accused the artists of plagiarizing his song "Haga Mestakhabeya" which was released 10 years earlier. Omar Kamal's response was to say it is common for songs to be coincidentally similar.

In its first week on SoundCloud, "Bint el-Geran" jumped to the number 2 spot on their global chart, attracting 4.4 million listeners in just one week.

Hassan Shakosh and Omar Kamal were invited to perform it in a Valentine's Day concert on February 14 that featured many other prominent artists, including Tamer Hosny, Nancy Ajram, Wael Jassar, and others.

The song contained lyrics that said, "If you leave me, I'll hate my life. I'll drown my sorrows in alcohol and smoke hashish." These lyrics sparked outrage, because government officials and the musicians' syndicate felt they promoted immoral behavior. One member of Parliament, Salah Hasballah, even said mahraganat are "more dangerous than the coronavirus"!

Because of this scandal, mahraganat singers were banned from performing in clubs, cafes, hotels, concert venues, or on Nile cruise boats. However, they continue to reach their audiences through social media.

About Hassan Shakosh

Hassan Shakosh (حسن شاكوش) is known as a mahragan singer. He was born in 1987, and as a child he grew up in a poor neighborhood, playing football (soccer) with his friends. He lacked the money to pursue an athletic career, instead working as a shoe repairman and a carpenter.

On February 14, 2020, he sparked outrage in a concert he performed with Tamer Hosny, Nancy Ajram, Wael Jassar, and others. He and his duet partner Omar Kamal performed a song whose lyrics contained a line that said, "If you leave me I'll hate my life I'll be lost drinking alcohol and smoking hash." The Egyptian Musicians Syndicate and some government officials were outraged because they felt this promoted immoral behavior. One member of Parliament, Salah Hasballah, even said mahraganat are "more dangerous than the corona virus"! The result was a ban under which mahraganat singers would not be allowed to perform in clubs, cafes, hotels, concert venues, or on Nile cruise boats.
