About Nagat al-Saghira

Nagat al-Saghira is an Egyptian singer and actress. She was born in Cairo in 1936, and she came from a family of artists. Her father was a calligrapher, and her sister was the superstar actress Souad Hosni. Her brother was Ezz el-Din Hosni, a violinist who used to work with Oum Kalthoum. She was given the name "Nagat al-Saghira" (which means "Nagat the Young") because at the time she began her career, there was another artist named Nagat Ali who was famous at the time for both acting and singing.

When Nagat was young, her brother Ezz el-Din Hosni trained her to memorize and sing Oum Kalthoum's songs. She succeeded in imitating them to perfection, which led to her being discovered.

Nagat al-Saghira performed songs created by all the great composers of her day. These included some who also wrote songs for Oum Kalthoum and Abdel Halim Hafez, such as Zakaria Ahmed, Baligh Hamdi, Kamal al-Tawil, her brother Ezz el-Din Hosni, Mohamed al-Mougy, and others.

شكل تاني حبك انت شكل تاني shakl tany hobak enta shakl tany Different kind, yours is a different kind of love.
حب غالي حب ناره مدوباني hob aalie hob naroh medawebani My dear love, the fire of my love melts me.
حتى لما بتنسى مره hata lama betensa mara Even when you forget
وتعاتبني بكلمة مرة we taatebni beklma morra and blame me with bitter words,
العتاب المر برضه له حلاوة el aetab el morr bardo loh halawa the bitter blame is also sweet.
شكل تاني حبك انت شكل تاني shakl tany hobak enta shakl tany Different kind, yours is a different kind of love.

خوفوني من هواك قبل ما احبك خوفوني hawefoni men hawak abl ma ahebak hawefoni Even before I loved you, they made me afraid, they made me afraid.
قالوا ياويله اللي يسكن جنب قلبك قالوا ياويله alow ya weloh elly yeskon gamb albak ya weloh They said woe to anyone who lives beside your heart, they said woe to anyone.
قلت هو ده اللي ناره مخوفاني kolt howa dah elly naroh me7awefani I said that is the one whose fire I fear, (1)
هو ده اللي قلبه يبقى شكل تاني hohwa dah elly alboh yeb2a shakl tany the one whose heart is a different kind [of love].
السنين فاتت وأنا مش داريه بيها elsenin fatet wa ana mosh dary beha Years have passed, and I didn't notice
من حنانك والهنا اللي بيجري فيها men 7ananak we el hana elly byegry feha because of your kindness and the joy [I found] in it,
والساعات وياك بتجري في ثواني we el sa3at wyak betgry fi sawany and the hours [I spend] with you feel like just seconds.
كل ثانية ليها دقة شكل تاني kol sanya leha da2a shakl tany Every second is a different type.

مره واحده قاسيت وداريت غصب عنى marah wahiduh qasit wadarit ghusib eunaa Once [my heart] was hardened and I was angry with myself.
من سكوتى كنت حاسه انك سامعنى min sukwataa kunt hasah 'iinak samienaa I felt that you heard me in my silence.
من جمالك من حنانك يومها وانت بتصالحنى min jamalik min hananik yawmiha wa'ant bitasalahanaa From your beauty, from your tenderness, on that day, when you reconciled with me.
كنت عايزه اقولك ومخاصمنى kunt eayizuh aqwlk wamukhasiminaa I wanted to tell you and my opponents
ومش بقولك حبك انت شكل تاني wamash biqawlik habk 'ant shakal tani [that] I don't say your love is a different kind.

حب غالي حب ناره مدوباني huba ghaly huba narih mdubani My dear love, the love of my fire melts me.
حتى لما بتنسى مره hata lama betensa mara Even when you forget
وتعاتبني بكلمة مرة we taatebni beklma morra and blame me with bitter words,
العتاب المر برضه له حلاوة el aetab el morr bardo loh halawa the bitter blame is also sweet.
شكل تاني حبك انت شكل تاني shakl tany hobak enta shakl tany Different kind, yours is a different kind of love.
