A personal note from the translator:

Dear fellow musician and dancer colleagues and students, we invite you to take a moment of silence to remember an amazing young talent who was taken from us at age 32. Pantelis Pantelidis, a modern Laiko singer, lost his life in February 2016, during a tragic car accident in Athens, Greece.

Pantelis was an exceptional artist and human being, a rising star, and was loved throughout all of Greece and the diaspora. His funeral gathered everyone. Businesses and night clubs shut down in mourning. His funeral was as big as that of Princess Diana. The Hellenic people love talent, but especially even more so when a talent comes from a simple family and is self made on his own. Much like the late Stelios Kazantzidis.

As the great female lyricist, Eftixia Papagianopoulou once said, "As long as there are Greeks and the young to sing and play the Rebetiko/Laiko music, then it will never die out."

I hope you will consider keeping Pantelis Pantelidis' memory alive by using his music.

Pantelis Pantelidis was one of the greatest artists of our time, whose life was tragically cut short. He was a fellow Anatolian Greek-Pontian.

Να μη δακρύσουνε ξανά αυτά τα μάτια na mi dakrisoune xana afta ta matia These eyes should not be teary again,
δεν του αξίζει den tou axizi he isn't worth it.
Εγώ μαυρίζω την ψυχή σου ego mavrizo tin psihi sou I blackened your soul.
μια ζωή μη χαραμίζεις mia zoi mi haramizis Don't waste your life.
Πως είμαι ο άντρας της ζωής σου pos ime o andras tis zois sou How I'm the man of your life -
πάψε πλέον να νομίζεις papse pleon na nomizis stop thinking that.
Ευτυχισμένη να σε κάνω eftihismeni na se kano To make you happy -
μην ελπίζεις min elpizis stop hoping for it.

Όνειρό μου και ζωή oniro mou ke zoi My dream and my life,
σε άλλα χέρια σε αφήνω se ala heria se afino I'm leaving you in other hands.
Πνίγω τον εγωισμό μου pnigo ton egoismo mou I'm drowning my pride,
το τηλέφωνο σου σβήνω to tilefono sou svino I'm erasing your number,
Σου αξίζει κάποιος άλλος sou axizi kapios alos you deserve someone else
από μένα πιο μεγάλος apo mena pio megalos other than me, someone better. (1)
Με τα λάθη μου θα πίνω me ta lathi mou tha pino I drink with my mistakes,
και μια συμβουλή του δίνω ke mia simvouli tou dino and one bit of advice I give him,
Μόνο mono only.

Φρόντισε να μην πονάει frondise na min ponai Make sure she isn’t hurt,
Καν' τη να χαμογελάει kan’ tin na hamogelai make her laugh,
Σκούπισε τα δάκρυα της skoupise ta dakria tis dry her tears.
Πάρε εμένα από κοντά της pare emena apo konda tis Take me from her side,
Πέταξε τα πράγματα μου petaxe ta pragmata mou throw away my things,
Βάλε τέλος στα όνειρα μου vale telos sta onira mou put an end to my dreams,
Και άσε εμένα να γυρίζω ke ase emena na girizo and let me wander.
Τέτοια αγάπη δεν αξίζω tetia agapi den axizo I don't deserve this kind of love.

  1. The word "megalos" can also mean "bigger" or "older". In the context of this song, though, it refers to "better", possibly more successful, richer, etc.

About the Translator

This page was contributed by Panayiota Bakis, who is happy to share her culture and music she grew up with! Here's how Panayiota describes her background:

I always love engaging with intelligent like-minded people, especially artists. I love sharing anything and everything about my Hellenic culture and upbringing, especially music and dance. A conversation with me will bring you back to America's favorite Greek-American movie by Nia Vardalos called My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

I love investigating Greek culture, history, music, and dance. Speaking of investigating, I think I missed my calling, I probably should have been an investigator. Instead, I use those skills to dig and dig and dig tirelessly, often times falling asleep on my laptop... just to find the truth. But, most importantly, accurate truth. For me personally, and other respectable folklorists, my culture and accuracy are very important. Each generation of ethnic born artists has a duty to do the best it can to pass down our traditions as was taught to us. We have been given this artistic gift to be the gatekeepers of our heritage and culture.
