About Abdel Halim Hafez
Abdel Halim Hafez was born in 1929 in a village north of Cairo. He was orphaned at a young age. His mother died a few days after giving birth to him, and his father died five years later. After a few years of living in an orphanage, he went to live with his aunt and uncle in Cairo. At age 14, he joined the Arabic Music Institute in Cairo. His big break came in 1953 when he was recruited to do a live radio performance to substitute for another artist who was unable to do it. This performance was heard by Hafez Abdel Wahab, the supervisor of musical programming for Egyptian national radio, and he opened doors for the young artist.
Abdel Halim Hafez was known as both a singer and a movie star. His music, in particular, appealed to young women because of its romantic character. At the peak of his popularity in the 1960's, he was famous both as a singer and as a movie star. He was known as the "Dark Nightingale." |

Verse 1
If we were to tell the story,
where would we begin the tale?
The story of our love, our love
has much more than a beginning.
If we were to tell the story,
where would we begin the tale?
The story of our love, our love
has much more than a beginning.
If we were to tell the story,
where would we begin the tale?
The story of our love, our love
has much more than a beginning.
We've lived within it.
My, how we've lived!
My, how we've lived!
We've seen much in it.
My, what we've seen!
My, what we've seen!
We've lived within it.
My, how we've lived!
My, how we've lived!
We've seen much in it.
My, what we've seen!
My, what we've seen!
But we walked,
and completed the journey of love,
and we've arrived.
But we walked,
and completed the journey of love,
and we've arrived.
And the world couldn't make us argue,
or separate us, or drive us apart.
And the world couldn't make us argue,
or separate us, or drive us apart.
Come on, let's go
to tell everyone how you and I
were able...
Come on, let's go
to tell everyone how you and I
were able...
To escape from all grief,
and live forever in love.
To escape from all grief,
and live forever in love.
To escape from all grief,
and live forever in love.
To escape from all grief,
and live forever in love.
And embrace our joy,
our joy, our joy,
together, and let our love,
our love stay young.
Verse 2
And we encountered, you and I,
in our journey, many things
that wounded others.
Jealousy, and its worries,
and what happens as a result.
And we encountered, you and I,
in our journey, many things
that wounded others.
Jealousy, and its worries,
and what happens as a result.
The day it came close to us,
it was driven away by our love.
The day it came close to us,
it was driven away by our love.
And we encountered the evil eyed [people],
and they noticed us.
And never once did they think
to leave us alone.
And we encountered the evil eyed [people],
and they notioced us.
And never once did they think
to leave us alone.
And they talked about us.
My, how they talked about us!
But our love
never changed at all.
And they talked about us.
My, how they talked about us!
But our love,
never changed at all.
And we encountered, you and I,
in our journey, many things
that wounded others.
Jealousy, and its worries,
and what happens as a result.
And we encountered, you and I,
in our journey, many things
that wounded others.
Jealousy, and its worries,
and what happens as a result.
The day it came close to us,
it was driven away by our love.
The day it came close to us,
it was driven away by our love.
The day it came close to us,
it was driven away by our love.
The day it came close to us,
it was driven away by our love.

to leave us alone.
And we encountered the evil eyed [people],

And never once did they think

And they talked about us.
My, how they talked about us!
But our love
Never changed at all.
And they talked about us,
My how they talked about us.
But our love,
never changed at all.
And you'd travel, and I'd travel.
Many times, we would travel.
And our hearts would meet,
with every rising of the moon,
with every rising of the moon.
And you'd travel, and I'd travel.
Many times, we would travel.
And our hearts would meet,
with every rising of the moon,
with every rising of the moon.
And if our paths
drove us apart,
the beauty of love
would bring us [back] together.
And if our paths

The beauty of love

And who can make us argue?
Who can break us apart?
And who can make us argue?
Who can break us apart?
Between our hearts, our hearts,
there's a meeting every moment.
There's a meeting every moment.

To escape from all grief,

Verse 4
And suddenly we stopped,
and our fear began.
And we found around us,
the world dark as night,
and wounded hearts.
Like the leaves of trees,
in the season of autumn,
blown by the wind,
blown by the wind,
blown by the wind.
And suddenly we stopped,
and our fear began.
And we found around us,
the world dark as night,
and wounded hearts.
Like the leaves of trees,
in the season of autumn,
blown by the wind,
blown by the wind,
blown by the wind.
And suddenly we stopped,
and our fear began.
And we found around us
the world dark as night,
and wounded hearts.
Like the leaves of trees,
in the season of autumn,
blown by the wind,
blown by the wind,
blown by the wind.
We asked our souls why.
What is greater than our love?
We asked our souls why.
What is greater than our love?
But our fear couldn't reach us,
and we knew it,
and we saw it,
and we felt it.
But our fear couldn't reach us,
and we knew it,
and we saw it,
and we felt it.
We asked our souls why.
What is greater than our love?
We asked our souls why.
What is greater than our love?
But our fear couldn't reach us,
and we knew it,
and we saw it,
and we felt it.
But our fear couldn't reach us,
and we knew it,
and we saw it,
and we felt it.
Verse 5
You perceive that love is just
glances, and touches.
But I perceive that
the most beautiful words
of lovers, my darling,
are the words comprised of lips.
You perceive that love is just
glances, and touches.
But I perceive that
the most beautiful words
of lovers, my darling,
are the words comprised of lips.
You, you, you, you.
You who are next to me
every second,
but tries to flee,
regardless of my words.
And I see
that our love is
two people together,
two people together,
weakened by a touch of the hand.
You perceive that love is just
glances and touches.
But I perceive that
the most beautiful words
of lovers, my darling,
are the words comprised of lips.
You perceive that love is just
glances and touches.
But I perceive that
the most beautiful words
of lovers, my darling,
are the words comprised of lips.
You, you, you, you.
You who are next to me
every second,
but try to flee,
regardless of my words.
And I see
that our love is
two people together,
two people together,
weakened by a touch of the hand.
You say you're afraid.
Let's leave and be apart,
Be apart, be apart.
Because the passion is great,
it may trick us both.
What are you afraid of?
What is there more beautiful
than the embrace of our love
to keep us warm?
You say you're afraid.
Let's leave and be apart,
Be apart, be apart.
Because the passion is great,
It may trick us both.
What are you afraid of?
What is there more beautiful
than the embrace of our love
to keep us warm?
And then you say, look at the moon.
And so I look at the moon.
And then you say, look at the moon.
And so I look at the moon.
You say, look at the moon.
And so I look at the moon.
That every lover
forgets the nights,
the nights, the nights within it.
Beautiful, the moon is beautiful.
Beautiful, the moon is beautiful.
Beautiful, the moon is beautiful.
Beautiful, the moon is beautiful.
The moon is beautiful, however,
what's more beautiful than the moon?
If we allow our lives
to one day taste the beauty of love.
You say you're afraid,
Let's leave and be apart,
be apart, be apart.
Because the passion is great,
it may trick us both.
What are you afraid of?
What is there more beautiful
than the embrace of our love
to keep us warm?
You say you're afraid,
Let's leave and be apart,
be apart, be apart.
Because the passion is great,
it may trick us both.
What are you afraid of?
What is there more beautiful
than the embrace of our love
to keep us warm?
And then you say, look at the moon.
And so I look at the moon.
And then you say, look at the moon.
And so I look at the moon.
You say, look at the moon.
And so I look at the moon.
You perceive that love is just

But I perceive that

You perceive that love is just

But I perceive that

You who are next to me

And I see

You say, look at the moon.
And so I look at the moon.

And our fear was defeated
after we paused.
And our fear was defeated
after we paused.
And with our heartbeats,
we knew together.
And we lived a life of love
in fantasy, fantasy,
Fantasy and reality,
and reality together.
Come on, let's go
to tell everyone how you and I
were able...
Come on, let's go
to tell everyone how you and I
were able...
To escape from all grief
and live forever in love.
To escape from all grief
and live forever in love.
To escape from all grief
and live forever in love.
To escape from all grief
and live forever in love.
And embrace our joy,
our joy, our joy,
together, and let our love,
our love stay young.

About the Translator
More than 100 song translations that appear on this web site, including this one, were created by Dr. Tahseen Alkoudsi. Together with his wife Kathe, Tahseen owned an import business in Lawrence, Kansas known as Cartouche.
Dr. Alkoudsi's imports business was his second career. His first career was in the service of the United Nations. Born in Damascus, Syria, he came to the U.S. for his M.A. and Ph.D. in economics, and worked in San Francisco. He joined the United Nations in Yemen, and worked in Saudi Arabia. He then joined the UNESCO Regonal Office for Arab States. He visited most of the Arab States in the course of his work, responsible for introducing computer sciences into educational facilities. For a time, he was stationed in Cairo, Egypt. He retired from that work in 1995.
Sadly, Tahseen died on Sunday, October 15, 2006. See this link for his obituary.
To me, Tahseen was so much more than a contributor to my web site. Even though we lived far apart, I saw Tahseen and Kathe several times over the years. I always appreciated their warmth and generosity. I first "met" Tahseen online back in 1997 on the med-dance list on the Internet, where he periodically posted messages. I knew he was in Lawrence, Kansas, so when a business trip arose requiring me to travel to the Kansas City area, I emailed him to say I'd be in the neighborhood. He and Kathe came to Kansas City for an evening get-together at Tasso's restaurant, and they invited several local dancers to join us. I saw them on follow-up visits to Kansas City. They vended at Rakkasah for several years, and it was always a pleasure to greet them there in the anteroom off to the left of the main stage. I also enjoyed encountering them in Egypt at the Ahlan wa Sahlan festival.
Tahseen will be missed by many. |
